COURAGE. STRENGTH. FAMILY.
“You can kiss your family and friends good-bye and put miles between you, but at the same time you carry them with you in your heart, your mind, your stomach, because you do not just live in a world but a world lives in you.” ― Frederick Buechner
Lo stranger! Come close and hear my tale. Even in this land of wonders—in these interesting times of men and beasts—I can say there are few in this realm or any other who can tell you a story of a journey such as the one I have for you.
So rest your tired feet, join me at the table and treat yourself to some of the mead from my hip. Fear NOT! For it flows us an endless river of the sweetest nectar of the gods; We will need it my friends, for a great tale is ahead of you.
I will tell you a story of sorcery, sacrifice and what troubles a man with a stout heart.
A Farmer, a Scroll, and a Promise
Though I’m not one to clench fists nor have it weighted down by a sword, I would though stand firm even against the gods to fight for the sake of family. You are here to share drink with me? Now you are family!
I confess my journey here is not entirely one of cheer, nor was my path carved with a sword like most of the great warriors, but not every tale worth telling is of blood and conquest, not every legend spoken be true. It is why I consider my words all the more valuable.
My story begins long ago in a place long forgotten and at a time much different than the one you know.
We had not the wonders you give no thought to today.
We had no switch to flip for light, no magic box for entertainment. Our light came from a blazing fire with wood cut from splintered hands.
Our entertainment came from stories such as the one I’m telling you. But this is no jest. Heed these words traveler.
Placed in these splintered hands was a scroll, given to me by a cloaked figure. Within the scroll was the promise of new land and longer life to the brave warrior willing to embark on it’s quest.
Placed in these splintered hands was a scroll, given to me by a cloaked figure. Within the scroll was the promise of new land and longer life to the brave warrior willing to embark on it’s quest. The journey, though, bid direction to the west—a land yet explored by my people. Twas as unknown to us as the darkest depths of the sea, and to speak of such a place was enough to brand you a fool. But I so longed for adventure; new stories to tell my son, Vanthür; and a chance to give my wife, my shieldmaiden, Yngrid, earth and water she could claim as her own.
You see, it was the promise of new lands that called to me. I cared not for “longer life”.
Within the scroll, I had to seek out elemental runes and return them to the crown of Midgard in the west—a place you now call Stonehenge. The scroll bids the traveler to stand brave over the power of Thor, known now as Fulgurite to receive their reward of land and life.
My travels required a sun stone to reveal the sun’s location and a handcrafted sun-board as a compass to keep my direction true.
I journeyed alone to the unknown west.
The Trick of a Trickster
The caw of seagulls had me rejoicing like a madman, I had reached land! What tales I would have upon my return, to tell my chieftain of my discovery and bring honor back to my name. But that is a tale for another time. The rune of fire, placed to the northern stone pillar. The rune of earth to the south, air to the west and water to the east.
I placed the power of Thor at my feet.
My travels for nothing.
I looked up to the sky and cried out to Odin, as I screamed his name I became surrounded by white fire. I felt myself pulled through Yggdrasil. Pulled through what felt like being submerged by water, yet I could draw breath. Brilliant light all around me.
The armor my wife had made for me started to burn red, like metal pulled from the fire, yet it did not harm my flesh.
I felt hands resting on my shoulders and my arms. Great beasts imbuing this farmer with their power. The power of dexterity, empathy and cunningness. With but a pound upon my chest they come forth to protect me.
When the chaos lay to rest, noises and smells never once known hammered my senses. This was the promised new land. I was transported through time and given longer life traveling through Yggdrasil to a new time without aging a single day.
Tho doubt found its way into my heart.
I fear Loki himself placed this scroll in my hands to make jest of a mortal man seeking a rich promise.
A New Place to Call Home
Alas, it has brought me here to you. Not a moon rises where I do not think of my wife. Not a sun sets where I do not think of my son. But this has been laid before me by the gods. On my worst days of longing for my family I curse them. However, a new family has taken me in. And though I don’t go looking for a fight, I will armor up and stand between a tyrant and the defenseless with my brothers and sisters of the Hope.
And one day, on my glorious fall in battle, be reunited with my shieldmaiden and my son, and speak of my adventures in this time and of their lives within the great Halls of Valhalla.
Until then, here. Have another DRINK!
